I have a vineyard to keep; I could do a better job if my body didn’t require so much sleep.
When I get up and search about, I find many shoots and branches a-poppin’ out.
My friend stopped by the other day, said a neighbor of ours was in a mighty bad way.
He suggested that he and I help to prune our neighbor’s vineyard, or at least we ought to try.
Though I wanted to, I shook my head, I was too tired, and besides I was still in my bed.
My friend said it was our duty to help our fellow man. I remarked that I would be glad to when I got my own orchard in hand.
Then I pointed to a low place in my garden wall. He said - that’s too bad, it happens to us all.
My master told us to be perfect said I, and though I may not make it, I’m sure going to try.
I am lacking in patience I found out the other day: a slow driver God planted in my way.
It wasn’t long before I gave a big sigh, and if he is not going anywhere he should pull over and let me by!
Then there is this plant of meekness that needs trimming a bit: someone ridiculed me, and Oh - I wanted his nose to hit.
Some day: my expressions of annoyance, anger and sadness, my thoughts, my thoughts betray!
You see said I to my friend, I sure would like to go with you, but first I must my own garden tend.
My friend looked at me a moment and said, I might also do more good if I checked my own garden instead.
So, I leave this message with you.
Help your neighbor with his pruning, after your own is through.
